Cardinal Jefferson King was born on February 20, 1929, in La Romana, Dominican Republic, and later moved to Antigua, where he became known for his athleticism, intelligence, and leadership. A standout student and athlete, he earned the title Victor Ludorum in an island-wide competition and excelled academically under the mentorship of Principal Maude Gordon at Parham School.
He began his career as a pupil teacher and quickly rose through the ranks of education, passing the regional Teacher’s Examination with distinction and choosing to attend Spring Gardens Teachers Training College. His career included teaching and leadership roles at several schools, including All Saints Primary School, Liberta Primary, and Jennings Secondary. He was also the founding principal of Pares Secondary School and played a key role in establishing All Saints Secondary School.
Mr. King furthered his studies at the University of London in Ontario and later served as a Senior Education Officer, Local Government Officer, and Establishment Officer, contributing significantly to education reform, teacher training, and public service in Antigua and Barbuda.
In addition to his professional achievements, he was a dedicated church leader, serving as an elder, youth leader, teacher, choir director, and organist. His life was marked by service, mentorship, and a deep commitment to community and faith.
This annual US$500 Scholarship honors a legacy of excellence, service, and education.
