What is a Board Member at Large?
A board member at large is a full board member who does not hold a specific position within the board of directors. They serve as a general board member without defined portfolio responsibilities. The role of a board member at large typically involves attending board meetings, offering input on key decisions, and providing expertise or guidance related to the organization's mission and objectives.

Despite not having designated duties, board members at large play a significant role in governing boards. They may be assigned tasks by the chair or through board votes based on their skills. Additionally, they have the same voting rights as other board members, can participate in committees, and potentially serve as committee chairs.

Expectation & Roles

Management & Rule Creation
Our Board Members at Large participate in the development, review and distribution of our organization's governance policies, bylaws, and strategic plans. In this role, they may draft, debate, review and distribute new policies including term limits and roles of the executive members of the board.

Decision Making
Board Members at Large also participate in our board meetings and discussions as voting members. You would contribute to making informed decisions on intiatives, expenditures and policies.

Monitoring & Assessment
Board Members at Large are often expected to monitor and assess the organization's performance.

Financial Oversight
As a Board Member at Large, you would assist in monitoring the organization's financial stability by reviewing financial documents and preparing budgets. You would also be expected to make recommendations and decisions related to budgeting and fundraising for the organization or specific projects/sub-committees.

Advocacy & Outreach
Our Board Members at Large also serve the organization as ambassadors who promote its mission and activities to external stakeholders, potential donors and the broader community.
